Box Office: ‘Lee Cronin’s The Mummy’ Scares Up $5.2 Million on Opening Day; ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ Still in First With $7.4 Million
Friday brought a slew of newcomers to the domestic box office, including Magnolia Pictures’ “Normal” and “Lee Cronin’s The Mummy” from Warner Bros. and Atomic Monster. However, neither of them could usurp Universal’s “Super Mario Galaxy Movie,” which is looking to lead the box office for the third weekend in a row.
“Lee Cronin’s The Mummy” placed third with $5.2 million on opening day from 3,304 North American theaters. The body-horror reimagining of Karl Freund’s 1932 classic should earn about $12 million by Sunday.

“Evil Dead Rise” filmmaker Cronin wrote and directed the film, which follows a journalist and his wife as they track down their daughter after an eight-year disappearance, only to discover that she has been corrupted by an ancient evil. Cast members include Jack Reynor, Laia Costa, May Calamawy, Natalie Grace, Shylo Molina and Billie Roy.

“Normal” landed at No. 7 with an estimated $1.06 million domestically from 2,060 theaters. It’s expected to gross $2.4 million over its opening weekend, according to rival estimates.
Bob Odenkirk stars in “Normal” as a small-town sheriff who discovers a disturbing secret while investigating a local bank heist. He also co-wrote the script with Derek Kolstad. Other cast members include. Ryan Allen, Henry Winkler, Billy MacLellan, Lena Headey and Reena Jolly. Ben Wheatley serves as director.
Despite all the new theater fare, it was a familiar one and two on the Friday charts. “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” was first with $7.4 million. Universal is hoping for $30 million by Sunday, which would push the animated sequel’s domestic total to $350 million. “Project Hail Mary” landed at No. 2 with $5.22 million on Friday. It should add $18.5 million by Sunday. Domestic total is projected to reach $283 million by the end of the weekend.

Two other holdovers rounded out the top 5. “The Drama” took fourth with an estimated $1.5 million on its third Friday at the domestic box office. After earning a projected $4.7 million by Sunday, Kristopher Borgli’s rom-com-thriller’s domestic total should reach $39.5 million. At No. 5 was “You, Me & Tuscany,” which made $1.1 million domestically as it heads into its second weekend. It should add $3.5 million by Sunday, for a domestic total of $14 million.
