Katie Holmes, Martha Stewart, Oscar Isaac and More Celebrate Brunello Cucinelli at ‘Brunello: A Gracious Visionary’ Screening
Stars gathered at Lincoln Center in New York City on Tuesday night for a gala screening of a new film centered on Brunello Cucinelli, the legendary Italian designer. The high-wattage crowd, dressed in luxe silk dresses and luminous pinstripe suites for the high-fashion event, included the likes of Martha Stewart, Allison Williams, Oscar Isaac, Katie Holmes and Joshua Jackson — a mix of longtime admirers, friends and newer fans of the luxury fashion brand. The drama, which mixes documentary and traditional narrative, premiered in Rome last December.

Stewart, for one, has been a longtime admirer of Cucinelli and has worn the brand at dozens of events over the years. “Once I discovered the clothing, I wanted to discover the man behind the clothing,” she told Variety on the carpet. Luckily, Cucinelli is known for welcoming fans into his orbit and she’s now had the privilege of visiting him at the grand headquarters of his billion-dollar empire in Solomeo, Italy multiple times. She even recently attended the designer’s 70th birthday at his Italian estate, alongside dozens of his other celebrity fans such as Patrick Dempsey, Jonathan Bailey, Vanessa Kirby and Ashley Park.

Stewart may be a harsh critic but she was blown away by the universe he created in the picturesque Italian village. “He has an entire town, with libraries and schools and factories and homes and mountains!” she says of Solomeo. “It’s very beautiful.”
It was a full-circle moment for Cucinelli, now 72, to return to New York for the screening, a city he first visited nearly 40 years ago as an emerging designer. “My first thought was, ‘Who is this genius who designed such a beautiful city?’” he recalled on the carpet, speaking in his native Italian.

The entire Cucinelli family — including his daughters Camilla Cucinelli, the vice president and co-head of the company’s women’s style team and Carolina Cucinelli, the company’s vice president and co-creative director — were also in attendance. “It’s a legacy my father wants to leave to the rest of the world,” Camilla said about film’s purpose for the family. “It’s important that people understand a little bit about the vision of our company, the philosophy of the brand.”
A devoted cinema fan, Cucinelli recruited a pair of Oscar winners in “Cinema Paradiso” helmer Giuseppe Tornatore and “Life Is Beautiful” composer Nicola Piovani for “A Gracious Visionary,” which recounts how he went from a peasant’s son to the founder of a world-class luxury brand.
“I wanted to tell the story of my life so my children, my grandchildren could know my story,” Cucinelli said while introducing the film.” Passing on this legacy became particularly important for the designer after his father died at 100 two years ago. “You must be a good man,” he remembered his dad always telling him. “Hopefully he can be proud of me now.”
After the carpet, attendees were ushered into the David H. Koch theater for a screening, followed by a intimate dinner attended by Oscar Isaac, Ryan Seacrest, Katie Holmes and more. Find more photos from the evening below:
