CNN suffered glitches Monday that left the channel unviewable across multiple distribution points, a problem the news network attributed to a “technical issue” at parent company Warner Bros. Discovery. “We are aware of a technical issue across Warner Bros. Discovery that resulted in losing CNN channels for a period of time today,” the news outlet’s PR team said in a statement shared at 12:48 p.m. ET. “We are working quickly to resolve it and apologize for the interruption.”
User reports of problems with CNN’s live channel spiked at around 12:16 p.m. ET, according to monitoring service Downdetector, with 893 user-contributed error reports. Most of the problems reported (79%) were related to the live channel, with 14% citing issues with streaming video and 6% related to the CNN App.
On air, CNN anchor Dana Bash acknowledged the technical problems. She told viewers on the “Inside Politics” show at about 12:51 p.m. ET, “Welcome back, and we are back. There was a technical issue across Warner Bros. Discovery’s channels that resulted in losing our signal. We’re very sorry for the interruption. We are very happy to be back.” The WBD technical problem also affected HBO and other channels. CNN’s Brian Stelter reported that some CNN viewers “saw scrambled screens and pixelated chaos,” while others saw error messages from their video-service provider about technical difficulties. Variety has reached out to CNN requesting more information.
