Boots Riley’s ‘I Love Boosters’ Sets West Coast Premiere as San Francisco International Film Festival Centerpiece – Film News in Brief
“Sorry to Bother You” filmmaker Boots Riley’s latest feature film, “I Love Boosters,” is set to premiere on the West Coast as the Centerpiece of the 69th San Francisco International Film Festival. The screenings will take place April 28 at Oakland’s historic Grand Lake Theatre, where Riley will appear for an onstage conversation.“I Love Boosters” follows a crew of young women who turn shoplifting into an act of defiance. Led by Keke Palmer’s character Corvette, the group travels across Oakland, nabbing coveted items and selling them at a discounted price, aiming to make fashion more accessible. Their exploits draw the attention of fashion mogul Christine Smith (Demi Moore), and the group must plan one final heist, joined by supernatural allies and time-bending technology.The Centerpiece program will feature two screenings at the Grand Lake Theatre in Oakland. The showtimes are 6:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Tickets will go on sale for SFFILM Members on March 2 at sffilm.org, and to the general public on March 4.The San Francisco International Film Festival takes place from April 24 to May 4 in San Francisco, Berkeley, and Oakland. The full program will be announced on April 1.A longtime member of the SFFILM community, Boots said, “I’m hyped as hell to bring I Love Boosters to SFFILM since they were the first organization to recognize me as a filmmaker and to support me in my filmmaking journey. It’s going to be extra special to premiere in my hometown at Grand Lake Theater I’ve been going to since I was a kid. This film is my best work, and it’s going to be special to see this movie, which is set in the Bay Area, play here.”
