Jennie Garth Says Dan Schenider Gave Her Such ‘Bad Vibes’ on ‘What I Like About You’ That She Requested to Communicate Solely With Show’s Other Creator
Jennie Garth avoided associating with Dan Schenider while starring in “What I Like About You,” despite that he co-created the WB sitcom.
Garth recalled her experience on the show, in which she starred opposite Amanda Bynes, during an episode of Dax Shepard’s podcast “Armchair Expert.” She first mentioned co-creator Will Calhoun, saying he was producing “What I Like About You” with “another guy,” saying, “I’ve selectively forgotten his name at the moment. He was part of that big scandal — Dan Schenider.”

She was referencing the allegations of abuse, sexism, racism and inappropriate dynamics with young women made against Schneider in the 2024 docuseries “Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV.” Schneider later sued the producers for defamation, calling the series a “hit job.”

“He was [on] the Amanda side of it,” Garth continued. “She had worked with him a lot on ‘The Amanda Show’ and all the things. So he had hooked his wagon onto her.” Shepard asked, “Were you getting bad vibes?” Garth said yes, adding, “To the point where I said to Will, ‘I would rather just communicate solely with you. I trust you. I think that you have my best interests in mind, and I don’t feel that way with your partner. So I’d rather just be with you.’ And he was like, ‘No problem.’”
When Shepard’s co-host Monica Padman asked Garth if she’d seen Bynes “destroyed” by Schneider, she replied, “Not specifically him. There were a lot of problems in the ecosystem of her.” Speaking about her former co-star, she added, “When we did the pilot, I had just turned 30, and she had just turned 16. I didn’t know how to be around a teenage girl. She taught me so much.”
