Martin Scorsese Joins ‘Star Wars’ for ‘Mandalorian and Grogu’ Voice Role
Martin Scorsese is venturing to a galaxy far, far away. The legendary director has a voice role in this summer’s “Star Wars” tentpole “The Mandalorian and Grogu.”
A continuation of the hit Disney+ series “The Mandalorian,” the movie follows Din Djarin (aka Mando) and Grogu (né the Child né Baby Yoda) as they navigate a galaxy that’s recovering from the fall of the evil Empire. In the newest trailer, Scorsese can be heard as an Ardennian shopkeeper who Mando approaches to seek information.
At first, the four-armed, fur-covered creature seems down to drop some knowledge. “For that price, I’ll tell you whatever you want,” Scorsese’s character says after Mando plops down a coin emblazoned with the New Republic symbol. However, when the masked bounty hunter says he’s “looking for a Hutt,” he’s quickly met with the door. “Closed for the night! Thank you.”
Scorsese, who famously likened blockbuster entertainment — particularly Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe — to “theme parks,” has previously done voice work in 2004’s animated adventure “Shark Tale” as well as his own movies, including “Mean Streets,” “Taxi Driver,” “The Last Temptation of Christ,” “The Wolf of Wall Street” and “Killers of the Flower Moon.” Meanwhile Jon Favreau, who created “The Mandalorian” and directed “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” has recruited Werner Herzog, Jack Black and other celebrities for voice cameos in what’s known as the Mandoverse.
On X, the official Star Wars seemingly referenced Scorsese’s prior Marvel comments (“that’s not cinema,” he said about the franchise in 2019) by referring to his “Mandalorian and Grogu” scene as as “absolute cinema.”

Disney and Lucasfilm will release “The Mandalorian and Grogu” in theaters on May 22. Pedro Pascal, who plays Din Djarin, will be joined onscreen by Sigourney Weaver as a skilled fighter pilot; Jeremy Allen White as Rotta, Jabba the Hutt’s rebellious son; and Jonny Coyne as a ruthless Imperial warlord. Beloved “Star Wars” characters, including Babu Frik and Zeb Orrelios, will also appear in the film, which is the first “Star Wars” installment to hit the big screen in seven years.
