Matthew Lillard Joins ‘Superman’ Sequel ‘Man of Tomorrow’
Matthew Lillard has joined the sprawling cast of “Superman: Man of Tomorrow,” the sequel to 2025’s blockbuster “Superman.”
It’s unclear who Lillard will be playing in the film, per Deadline, which first reported the news. What is known is that Lillard will appear alongside David Corenswet, who is starring as the one and only Man of Steel.
“Man of Tomorrow” picks up after the events of “Superman” as the titular hero is forced to team up with his nemesis Lex Luther (Nicholas Hoult) to defeat an even bigger threat: the super-intelligent antagonist Brainiac (Lars Eidinger). Also on the call sheet: Adria Arjona as the alien queen Maxima, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart/Green Lantern.

James Gunn is writing and directing “Man of Tomorrow,” which is currently in production. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on July 9, 2027.

“Superman” is part of Warner Bros. efforts to relaunch the DC Universe. Before Superman returns to the big screen, his cousin Kara Zor-El will be the subject of her own feature film, this summer’s tentpole “Supergirl” on June 26. Later this year, DC will release the body-horror film “Clayface” on Oct. 23.
Lillard, who appeared in this spring’s box office hit “Scream 7,” may have manifested a role in “Superman: Man of Tomorrow.” Last summer, he joked he was “waiting” for Gunn to invite him to join the DCU. The two had collaborated over two decades ago on 2002’s “Scooby-Doo” and 2004’s “Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed,” where Lillard played Shaggy and Gunn served as screenwriter.

“I have wanted to be in a superhero world,” Lillard told the audience at Los Angeles Comic-Con. “I’ve wanted to be in [the DCU], if anyone’s curious. If you run into James Gunn, tell him I’m available. I keep waiting for that invitation. I don’t know if it’s lost in the mail.”
