President Donald Trump has fired U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi, while praising her as having done “a tremendous job” in cracking down on crime during her nearly 14-month tenure. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote that Bondi will be “transitioning” to an as-yet-unspecified job in the private sector. Todd Blanche, the deputy attorney general, will assume the role of acting U.S. attorney general, according to the president.
“Pam Bondi is a Great American Patriot and a loyal friend, who faithfully served as my Attorney General over the past year,” Trump wrote. “Pam did a tremendous job overseeing a massive crackdown in Crime across our Country, with Murders plummeting to their lowest level since 1900. We love Pam, and she will be transitioning to a much needed and important new job in the private sector, to be announced at a date in the near future, and our Deputy Attorney General, and a very talented and respected Legal Mind, Todd Blanche, will step in to serve as Acting Attorney General. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP”
Bondi’s exit as attorney general comes as the Justice Department is currently reviewing a major Hollywood deal: Paramount Skydance’s proposed $111 billion takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery. Last month, the acting head of the DOJ’s antitrust division, Omeed Assefi, said the Paramount-WBD deal will “absolutely not” be on a fast-track for approval due to political reasons, in the context of the Ellison family’s friendly ties to Trump. Assefi took over the role after the Justice Department ousted his predecessor, Gail Slater, who reportedly clashed with Bondi.
Bondi was sworn in as the 87th attorney general of the U.S. on Feb. 5, 2025. Trump “has been frustrated with Bondi on multiple fronts,” CNN reported, citing anonymous sources. The president is particularly upset “over her handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files, and he has also fumed that she has not investigated or prosecuted enough of his political opponents,” according to the outlet. Per her biography on the DOJ’s website, Bondi is a fourth-generation Floridian from Tampa who spent more than 18 years as a prosecutor, trying cases ranging from domestic violence to capital murder. She served as Florida’s first female attorney general, serving for two consecutive terms from 2011-2019. Last month, Trump fired Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, the first member of his cabinet to be ousted in his second presidential.
